Description:
English 10 will reinforce and build upon the skills learned in English 9, and will add canonized American Literature including major authors from the Puritan Era, the Age of Reason, the Romantic Period, the Civil War Era, the Twenties, Modern black Literature, the Forties, the Fifties, and Modern Drama. Studies may also include World Literature. Comprehension of literary works displayed through writing will be employed; students will have the opportunities to respond critically, reflectively, and imaginatively, to literary works, will distinguish purposes and content which language can hold (e.g. logic, opinion, ideology, point of view, and suggestion). Students will also identify and form conclusions, recognize and use persuasive devices, judges authors' purposes and perspectives, read and interpret public documents, and develop vocabulary through decoding, Greek and Latin roots, literary terms, contextual clues, and independent reading.
In addition to the literature, the composition component of language arts will provide students with opportunities to write for various audiences and purposes including, but not limited to stating and supporting a point of view or opinion, using transitions effectively to relate points and paragraphs to each other and the main idea, expository writing (persuasion and literary analysis) and technical writing. As part of the writing process, students will use reading skills in the content areas, listen critically for purposes and take appropriate notes, interpret research by summarizing, analyzing, evaluating, and use a variety of technological tools in the learning, writing, and presentation processes. Using technology, students will receive instruction in the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. MLA style will be used to format papers, and proper use of grammar, spelling, and mechanics will be required.
Oral communications will include: effective delivery techniques, responsible and confident speaking on specialized topics, creation and use of technological devices in oral presentations, and demonstration of the various types of speeches in conjunction with an effective personal delivery style.
